Twenty-three

Tanner grabbed the flashlight from its charging cradle and followed Shaye outside. The night was still, silence defined by the distant sigh of water finding its way down the rugged mountainside. He waited for her to ask for light. When she simply paused for a few moments to let her eyes adjust to darkness, he smiled and felt something uncurl inside him. Like him, she was at home in the night.

“I can’t check fences very well in the dark,” she said, “but I can make sure the horses have food and water.”

“Everything should be fine until morning. I fed the horses before I picked you up for breakfast, then turned them out into the east pasture. The fences and cattle were where they should be, all water troughs were full, mineral lick has been replaced, and the old salt licks are only about half gone.”

What he didn’t say was how much he had enjoyed the simple physical chores, the clean air, and the increasing light of morning flooding the quiet land.

It’s a dream, he told himself roughly. Like Shaye.

“Where to?” she asked as she swung easily up into Lorne’s truck.

“Take the track along the west pasture. You know the one?”

“Yes.” She started the truck, waited for the engine to even out, and shifted into first. As they bumped along the road, she said, “We should talk to Deputy August.”

“Hard to do that without implicating ourselves,” Tanner said.

In the pale gleam of the dashboard, the full line of her lower lip made him think about licking, biting, sucking.

“But . . .”

“Yeah,” he said, forcing himself to look away. “I’ll go in tomorrow and tell him what we found at Brilliant Moments.”

“But not at Rua’s house.”

“I’ll tell August I’m going to see Rua, and ask for any info he might have. Then I can drive up, find Rua, and call it in like a good citizen.”

Without meaning to, Tanner found himself studying the curves and shadows of Shaye’s mouth again.

“Where will I be?” she asked.

“Sleeping in. You’ve had a hard few days.”

“Not that hard. If you leave me here, I won’t be here when you get back and I won’t be taking any of your calls. I’m in this to the end or I’m gone.”

He started to argue, then decided it wasn’t worth the energy. He’d rather taste her. “Don’t snarl when I wake you up early.”

“I won’t.”

“And we agree on our story before we get there. I got lucky with an online check of coins—”

“Do you have a computer with you?” she asked.

Despite the ache and hunger prowling through him, he smiled. “Like I said, you’d make a good investigator. I don’t have a computer, but I know people who do. So I got two addresses. The first was a dead end. The second was Brilliant Moments, where we got Rua’s ID.”

She nodded, downshifted, crept around a pile of rocks, and shifted into third again.

The pale flesh of her hands caught his eye. Her fingers looked delicate. Edible. He remembered how it had felt to suck one into his mouth.
